Single

Single

The single status isn’t as simple as you might think. Of course, if you are unmarried on the last day of the year, you would qualify as single status on your return. You would also qualify if you are legally separated from your spouse, under a separation decree on the last day of the year. Additionally, if you are a widow or widower, you would likely fall under this status. The final way to qualify for single status is this: if you are still married, but never lived under the same roof, even for one night, you may qualify for single status.

Unfortunately, you jump into a higher tax bracket under single status than with some of the other filing options. If you have a child living with you, it would be more advantageous to qualify as Head of Household Status.
